Say what??? Since when did lettuce become so lucrative?!
It’s true. This weekend shopping at the Grand Market might really pay off if you swing by the New Rochelle Mayors’ Challenge exhibit after buying your tomatoes and turnips. You can enter your name into a drawing to win a $200 to spend at local New Rochelle businesses of your choice, simply for participating in this special public-facing experience.
Have you heard of the Mayors’ Challenge yet? If not, take a read to learn more. It’s a huge honor that Bloomberg Philanthropies selected our city out of hundreds of applicants nationwide to participate. They really liked our unique idea.
What is our idea? So glad you asked! In a nutshell, the New Rochelle team is trying to test whether certain technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality could help ordinary citizens better understand what is being built in their city, and even help citizens design future public spaces in collaboration with their local government. As far as we know, New Rochelle is one of the few (or only?) cities working on this issue with the solid expertise to back it up. Just imagine if New Rochelle won this national competition, and what that would mean for our city and its reputation as a forward thinking, innovative community.
The City has partnered with the New Rochelle BID (that’s us, writing this newsletter, of course) and IDEA New Rochelle to put forth the best possible foot in this competition. Of course, we can’t win without the solid participation of our New Rochelle residents…but we’re not concerned. We know we can count on you to show up in droves this Saturday to show that New Rochelle pride, even if there wasn’t a chance to win $200!
This Week at the Grand Market
In addition to the Mayors’ Challenge interactive exhibit, Louie Miranda will provide a family international performance with his great blend of Latin music, interactive games and sheer joy between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The farmers market team will also have a selection of board games on hand (think: chess, checkers, apples to apples, playing cards, dominos…) to play on the cherry red bistro tables. Just ask to borrow a game and return it back to the market manager table when you’re finished.
Vendor details: Pots’ Canna Lilies will also be back for just two more weeks. They are selling beautiful canna lilies; all proceeds benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Our bread vendor suffered a medical emergency last week. We are working on identifying another bread vendor as a replacement and send our best wishes for quick healing to our prior vendor. Thank you for your patience regarding the lack of bread this weekend. In the meantime, you can count on seeing some of our new vendors like Bambino Ravioli Pastificio, The Cheese Guy, Angela from Naturally Naz, Dr. Pickle, and returning favorites like Uncle T’s Spices and Farm Eats on Saturday! Also…did you notice that the New Rochelle Public Library has rolled a cart out onto the lawn? Those books are for sale! Buy a book….each purchase supports Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library.
Some cool downtown businesses that have opened in the past six months:
